BUILD A ROLLING RAISED BED, PART 1

With warmer weather upon us, there’s no better time to build a garden. Being able to grow your own fruits, vegetables and herbs ensures that your family is eating well and without the use of pesticides. Raised gardening beds – especially those with wheels – provide flexibility for where you grow your plants and what you can grow.

Our DIY Raised Planter Bed is made from recycled pallets, making it sturdy and eco-friendly – as well as easy on your wallet. With an endless variety of size options, these recycled pallet gardening beds will fit your home and style, guaranteed. The addition of provides the ability to move the planter bed depending on weather or light conditions.

MATERIALS:

3 pallets (1 Large and 2 Small) Fein Multimaster (Available at Woodcraft) 4 casters (Available at Woodcraft) General Finishes Waterproof Wood Sealant (Available at Woodcraft) Nail gun or wood nails and a hammer *Hand or circular saw as needed (see step 7)

Step 1: For this particular size garden bed we used 3 pallets – one large and two small.

Step 2: Take apart the pallets by cutting through the nails with the Fein Multimaster using the metal attachment.

Step 3: For nails that are too difficult to cut you may have to use a nail remover and hammer to force them out. (note to self: next time have safety goggles over eyes - not hair)

Step 4: Using the bottom of one of the smaller pallets, begin attaching smaller boards between the existing boards to fill in the gaps as best you can. Don’t worry if it’s not totally airtight – we will be lining the Planter Bed with planting fabric in Part 2.

Step 5: Turn the bottom of the pallet bed over and attach the 4 casters to the bottom of the planter bed in each corner.

Step 6: Using the support posts from the disassembled pallets, form 4 vertical posts, which will be placed in each corner of the planter bed to attach the siding to. (PS- I don't always wear the wrong bra but when I do, it's an epic fail.)

Step 7: Begin attaching the disassembled wood planks from the 3 pallets to the sides of the planter bed – attaching them to the vertical posts. Note: you may need to trim the sizing of the planks to fit your planter – we used a circular saw, however any hand saw will also do the trick. By the way, how cute is Hank sleeping on the floor of the workshop while I work?

Stay tuned for the completion of this up-cycled pallet turned raised garden bed in a few weeks! We will be completing the look with a liner, waterproof wood sealant, organic soil and organic vegetables and herbs!
